Vivian E. Browne

Vivian E. Brown [1929-1993] Painter, Printmaker, Designer, Graphic designer, Illustrator, Educator

Vivian E. Browne was born in Laurel, Florida in 1929. She enrolled in etching courses during undergrad and graduate school and later made the technique the focus of her printmaking career. Browne was drawn to the great contrast in etching. She became a part of the Rutgers University faculty in 1970 as an instructor in the arts department, heading it from 1975 to 1978, and, in 1985 became the first African-American and the second woman to receive full professorship within that institution. Vivian E. Browne was the recipient of multiple awards throughout her life.
