Julie Mehretu

Julie Mehretu [1970- was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In 1992 she graduated with a BA in painting and in 1997 she earned an MFA in visual arts. Mehretu is a Studio Harlem Museum artist-in-resident alum (2000-2001) and a MacArthur “Genius” Fellow 2005. ⁣

In 2015, Mehretu won the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the US Department of State Medal of Arts, presented by former Secretary of State John Kerry.  

Her work has appeared in major exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. and has also participated in the Sydney Biennale, the Bienal de São Paulo, and Whitney Biennial.⁣
