Texas based artist, Delita Martin, picked up her first drawing pencil at age five and discovered her love for creating stories with drawings. She pursued her passion throughout her childhood and began her formal art education at Texas Southern University, receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drawing and continued her studies at Purdue University earning a Master of Fine Arts in printmaking. Martin’s process of layering various printmaking, drawing, sewing, collaging, and painting techniques lend to her creative portraits that fuse the real and the fantastic. In her work she combines signs and symbols to create a visual language that powerfully captures the identity, spirit, and narratives of women of color. She often looks to vintage and family photographs as a source of inspiration. Each work uniquely speaks to the complexity of spirit, race, gender, beauty, and in some ways deals with empowering transformations, captivating and commanding attention.
